1742 km later, Arvid is riding through Whitehorse, Yukon! He’s been looking forward to dinner: 3 piece chicken dinner from KFC with fries, gravy and coleslaw.

Arvid enjoyed a delicious breakfast of 3 eggs, sausage, toast and hash browns this morning at the Otter Falls Cutoff. They generously donated Arvid’s meal as well as some teas to go! Also met a nice family traveling from California to Alaska in their RV who were very interested in what we were doing. Definitely worth the stop if you’re ever travelling through Yukon!
Arvid is resting while the food settles before he hits the highway again. The sun is out and it’s slowly warming up!
It’s been a tough morning for Arvid so far. Understandably, he’s often hit with a morning “funk” after so many days of going on only 3-4 hours of sleep. He’s currently taking his second nap of the morning (first one was 8 minutes) and has been drinking hot water to warm up. It’s now dropped to 6 degrees Celsius.
July 11, 2015 — Back in Canada
Arvid’s back in Canada after surviving Alaska and the Dalton Highway.
It’s 5:15am in Haines Junction. And there’s a man bundled up on his bike ahead of us. It’s 7 degrees Celsius. But there’s the anticipation of a hot breakfast about an hour ahead.
Arvid will be arriving in Haines Junction shortly, 1am local time. He will be sleeping for a few hours. Good night from Yukon.
Arvid is great at multi-tasking as he snapped this photo as he cruised by on his bike. Note the time: 12:36 AM and it is still bright out! Time for a picnic.
Arvid remembers this lake from a training ride in 2004. It is spectacular in its beauty.
Shortly after this picture was taken an approaching motorist alerted us that there was a grizzly bear just up ahead. No sooner had we thanked him when we saw a huge grizzly dash across the road a short distance in front of us with a smaller brown bear in pursuit.
No more urge for bathroom breaks by the side of the road.
Arvid and crew enjoyed dinner at Destruction Bay. Soup, grilled cheese and egg sandwich and Beef Barley soup. A treat to sit down next to the window watching it rain. He is back on the bike and it is raining (again)😅
July 11, 2015, 2am Border Crossing
July 11, 2015, 2am
Arvid crosses the Alaska-Yukon border leaving Alaska and the Dalton Highway behind him. Problem is, Yukon doesn’t provide any better road conditions for awhile.
As Arvid makes his way into civilization and cell coverage, you’ll see on the tracker map (when he’s in cell range) he is nearing Haines Junction, Yukon. Here it is expected he will sleep for about 4 hours before continuing down the Alaska Highway. This would put him at 1587 km into his ride.
Here’s Arvid enjoying the ambiance of the Hit & Run Cafe patio.
Arvid put a strong day in yesterday on some flat surfaces for a change, despite the kilometres behind him starting to take a toll on his body. His back, foot, hands and mouth each bothered him at times yesterday. Between 9am yesterday and 3 am today, Arvid slept for a total of 44 minutes with a number of 7 to 15 minute naps.
He enjoyed a pizza in Tok, Alaska before cycling through a few hours of steady rain which turned heavy at some points.
He crossed the Alaska / Yukon border shortly after, bid farewell to the smooth highway beyond the Alaska border and slept for 3 hours. By 8:30 am Pacific Time he was back on the road.
Unfortunately, it appears the recent road “renovations” in Canada is basically a pebbled pavement in some stretches interspersed with washboard gravel (it’s embarrassing). In a vehicle it feels like a rough road but to Arvid, who feels every bump and rock, it’s “jarring”.
There’s still some tough mountain climbs and ravines waiting ahead of him in Yukon and BC that must be on his mind.
Arrived in Canada, with no cell service and poorly maintained roads.
Day 4 Stats:
18 hours on bike
3h 44m of sleep (3h at night)
372km (1320km total)
This is Paul back at home. Take note that Yukon’s cell coverage is pretty much terrible. We’ll hopefully hear from them in a while. Destruction Bay is the first place with any coverage, at 1482km. He was at 948km at 12pm yesterday (Friday), so I would expect them to make it to Destruction Bay between 6pm-midnight tonight (Saturday).
