About the Follow and Support Vehicles System

Though Arvid continues onward continuously, stopping only a for a couple hours of sleep, his support crew can’t. As Arvid continues, fatigue and stress will set in, and his mental focus will progressively narrow as his energy dwindles, and he will become more dependent on his crew – mentally, emotionally, and physically. It is incredibly important, therefore, that Arvid is always followed by a mentally alert crew.

To accomplish this, the team is divided into two groups that take 12-hour shifts around the clock. Arlene, Welden, and Ruth are in the first group, and Henry, Brigitte, and Matt are in the second. While one team supports Arvid from the Follow Vehicle from 2PM to 2AM, the other gets rest and tracks down supplies to restock the Follow vehicle with food, ice, beverages, and other necessities. Then, at 2AM the teams switch, allowing the follow team to get some rest and buy more supplies while the other team follows Arvid in the van.

Crew swaps typically happen in the span of five minutes. The goal is to create as short a break in Arvid’s momentum as possible.

And Arvid just keeps going.

This follow/support/follow/support switching system will continue 24/7 until Arvid crosses the finish line in Maryland. As time zones shift and the race progresses, the crew and Arvid will lose all sense of day/night/bedtime/meal time – perpetual jetlag.

Despite a slight holdup behind a car accident, this has been a good day for Arvid. He made good time and his body has begun to cooperate better. We’re currently North of Tuba City Arizona.) Heading into the Rockies earlier today, Arvid made phenomenal time on the steep climbs preceeding Flagstaff, NZ. After stopping for some Macdonalds in Flagstaff, Arvid caught a massive tailwind and flew down a 15-20 km stretch at some insane speeds. Eventually, of course, we had to run up two fairly steep inclines, conveniently rolling by a sign advertising KFC. Upon consuming some of Colonel Sanders’ finest, Arvid discovered that his system is digesting food at the speed he needs, which is fantastic news. It took Henry a while to get back with the food. Arvid continues to climb through the night. He is struggling to get food in to his system. His body just does not want to

We are currently resting at a litle restaurant in the small town of Salome in Arizona. Due to extreme heat on the road and ongoing fatigue, Arvid decided to stop for some food and is going to be spending the coming evening’s sleep time right now. This both allows him to recover from the excruciating heat and gives him more biking time in the evening, when it’s cooler and he can travel faster and more efficiently.

In this weather, breezes simply make things worse. To survive in this weather, Arvid wears a bag around his neck filled with ice. As the ice melts, it cools his neck and his back, and the ice pack is replenished regularly. In addition to providing

him with water bottles, the follow crew also sprays him with water very frequently. Water requires heat to evaporate, so spraying with water will help cool him down – even when the wind is itself hot.

Even with these aids, however, the heat is unbearable and takes its toll, so Arvid has had some food and will be spending two hours in the air conditioned van.

Howver, Arvid has in fact been making excellent time and has suffered no actual health or technical issues. His bike is still running the original tires from Oceanside! Things are looking good.
