Laundry is a beautiful thing

Don’t be fooled by photographs of Arvid on the bike – that is not the same pair of shorts and shirt every time! Gotta love that clean laundry!

Half-way!!!

Earlier this morning Arvid passed the half-way point in RAAM just east of Pratt, Kansas! It is such a good feeling. He and Weldon (crew chief) had a very good interview with Marcie Markusa from CBC. The morning is sunny and warm, 26 degrees. Kansas is open prairie so he is still hoping for tailwind.

Through the Night in Kansas

The nightly crew swap just happened outside of Greensburg, KS. Arvid’s heading into the night once again, ahead of Nielsen, but still behind Haas. He had a storm earlier in the evening, but the weather has since cleared up, and we’re all hoping for the best.

Also, we think we may have figured out the solution to the reception issue, which is preventing us from providing you with updates on Arvid’s location activities, position, and physical condition.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Made it safe to Ulysses, KS!

We’ve just stopped at McDonalds in Ulysses, Kansas for WiFi and a budger for Arvid. He is currently behind Haas and Nielsen in his age category, having made it 2132 km, just 350-400 km short of the RAAM halfway point. He’s in relatively good spirits, but wind hasn’t been forgiving. The look on his face says it all.

Meeting others on their journey

When you tell someone about RAAM, their first reaction is an either sober or incredulous exclamation along the lines of “That must be a long distance.” The second reaction, a question really, goes something like, “That must be incredibly tiring, do the riders sleep at all?” The third, often unvoiced and sometimes less concerned is, “What’s the route like? You must see a lot of America.”

You see a lot of America. RAAM’s route avoids large highways, opting for backcountry roads travelling through lesser known places and stops. And the best part of it is that you’re taking it quite a bit slower than the highway-bound motor vehicle. Going slower means you have time to watch scenery in great detail that you’d never even see on the highway in a fast-paced vehicle. Google Cuchara Pass or look up “Through Arvid’s Eyes – Day 5” on the blog here to see what we’re talking about.

Yesterday, we met a group of three guys at McDonalds who’ve approached RAAM from that third question. They set out from Oceanside roughly a week before we did. But rather than opt for the thrill of a race, they’ve decided to take it easy and try and make 100 miles a day (Arvid makes 250-300), sleeping in in the tents they carry on the back of their bicycles. They’re hoping to reach Annapolis in a month’s time, with a goal of seeing the country — but make no mistake, there’s no doubt they love cycling. They wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t love cycling, and they were well informed of RAAM’s affairs and happenings.

These three fellows bear the names Brandon Arnold, Micah Hamilton, and Nathanael Peirson. You can take a peak at what they’re doing here.

IMG_20130615_113319

But there’s something else here that began spinning itself over and over in my mind. Most people look at ultramarathon cycling and are just blown away by the sheer scale of races like RAAM and the incredible iron will and physical fitness involved – and they see it in relation to themselves or common

perceptions about what most humans are capable of when riding a bicycle. But every rider has a story and a history, and it begins small and gradually builds. Some day these three could be ultramarathon cyclists riding for something they believe deeply in, and we will have crossed paths with them on one step in the journey to reach that point.

And this idea extends beyond sports. Arvid’s journey happened gradually through a series of steps, and so did Charles Mulli’s when he responded to a call he felt to care for, as one of them himself, the street children in his nation. Where he is now is a product of many steps in a journey of faith. It took more patient and persistent steps to bring the lives and passions of Arvid and Charles together into a partnership and friendship that has gradually become more than the sum of its parts and touched lives.

A tip of the hat, or helmet, to you three Gentlemen. Grandpas can, and so can you! We hope you see and learn much on your Tour de RAAM.

Through Arvid's Eyes – Day 5

Arvid had a phenomenal fifth day. Beginning in fourth place in his age category, Arvid set out west from Pagosa Springs, heading through Rio Grande National Park, riding through the desert yet again. He and the wind made friends, and in great spirits he spead up into the rockies once again past unbelievable scenery, climbing up to 7000 ft, passing two riders in his age category and ending in the town of Trinidad. See what he saw.

Through Arvid’s Eyes – Day 4

Heading out of Utah, Arvid headed into Colorado, climbing high into the rockies, reaching Durango – the official end of the journey for all RAW (Race Across the West) riders. But he didn’t stop at Durango, climbing north late into the night. Ride alongside him and see what he saw that day.

Through Arvid’s Eyes – Day 3

Arvid’s third day took him into Mojave once again, through Arizona north to Flagstoff, coming just 20 miles shy of reaching the Grand Canyon at the nearest point. This took him through Navajo nation, heading north into Utah. Here is the ride, from his point of view.

Through Arvid's Eyes – Day 2

Arvid’s second day on the road was spent battling extreme heat and the resulting fatigue and dehydration through the desolate and beautiful Navajo desert. He made it through the day in one piece, but the heat took its toll. Here is his journey that day, through his eyes.

Chilling in Trinidad

Trinidad is a town in Colorado, if you’re confused and have the Bahamas running through your head.

Arvid’s fifth day went very well – he and the wind made friends the whole day, which added to his time and gave him a boost in the uphill climbs. He also achieved his second highest speed on a bicycle ever – 92 km/h. His spirits were lifted and sustained by some unbelievable scenery throughout the ride. He is resting in Trinidad, CO, and will continue on his journey in just over an hour’s time.

Arvid is currently second place in his age category, behind Franz Wintersberger.

And so RAAM carries on!

Colorado hospitality

Thank you to Mark in Colorado!! We were looking for a shady spot so Arvid could eat his KFC lunch in comfort. Mark was in the front yard of his country home and approached us as we pulled the lawn chairs out of the van. “Are you with RAAM?” he asked. “I have been following it and have seen some riders come past. What can I get for you? Something to drink? Some steak? Chocolate bars? Ice cream? Do you need a shower?” Wow! What hospitality! Thank you Mark. You brightened our day.

Riddle
