You’ve seen short clips, you’ve seen photographs, and you’ve listened to interviews; Here is the man in action – cycling across America!
Not so long ago, Arvid Loewen made the halfway point in his RAAM 2013 race for Mully Children’s family. The following is a simple montage of scenes from
that first half of the race.

Rural Missouri. Narrow roads with no shoulder. Some rather reckless drivers. We are following close behind Arvid.
Weldon, Arlene and I just pulled up to where the van is parked in rural Missouri. It is 1:32am. We skipped supper yesterday, choosing to sleep instead, thinking we would have a bite to eat when we got up at 11:30, before we would come to begin our shift. After all, our hotel was right next to a 24 hour Perkin’s. After a good rest we. packed up and went to Perkin’s
only to find out it only opened at 5:30. Not to worry. A 24 hour McD was right next door. We walked in and ordered our McD breakfast only to find out they don’t serve breakfast until
6am. They offered us cinnamelts. Yum! We had just sat down at
12:10 when the manager came to tell us that they had actually closed 10 minutes ago and we were now a security issue. So, we enjoyed our cinnamelts in the car and off we went! It’s a new day!
Currently, we are several hours west of Jefferson City, MO, heading through the Grand Buff Nature Conservation Area. We’re currently at 3000km distance and for the first point in the day it some reception. Arvid is currently taking a snooze after some unusually steep and abrupt climbs. For part of today’s rides, Arvid rode over some terrible shoulders littered with debris, causing him to have not one but TWO flats. To avoid a major setback, we’ve been spending time on sleeping breaks fixing and re-tubing tires and working on other worn out parts of the bikes, like the elbow cradle foam and the chain. In approximately an hour, Arvid will wake up and we’ll proceed further to the next time station in Washington, MO. Stay tuned for
more updates!
A big yawn. Where to start? Day fades into night fades into day … Mornings are particularly difficult as we drive in to the morning sun. We try not to all be sleepy at the same time. This is also a difficult part of the day for Arvid as he would rather be sleeping as well. Our challenge is to keep his mind stimulated along with looking after his nutritional requirements. There is great camaraderie among our crew and many moments of laughter. RAAM rules allow the support vehicle to drive alongside Arvid for one minute four times per hour. During these moments we can hand off food and use the minute to share a story, joke etc. We read him encouraging comments and tweets. We navigate, track his progress, and call in to headquarters at each time station. One would think that it is boring for the crew but there is always something to do. We thank you for your ongoing prayers and support.
This was a particularly good handoff made by Weldon in the desert.
Arvid uses a two bottle system, where he works his way through fresh bottles, holstered in two bottle holders, around the clock. This not only allows him to carry over a liter of liquid on his bike at any given time, but also allows him to carry two kinds of liquid at one once.
In addition to drinking ice water constantly – procuring Ice is a key part of the support vehicle’s job – Arvid also drinks several other drinks that provide him with different kinds of nourishment. Here is the van’s drink Menu:
Water
Arvid takes his water ice cold – every fresh bottle we hand him is one half ice, one half cold water.
Goji Berry Juice
Goji berries are a type of red berry grown widely in China. They are incredibly rich in a wide variety of vitamins and anti-oxidants – essential for a body being pushed as hard as Arvid’s is.
Sustained Energy
You don’t want to know what’s in this powder-based drink. In Brigitte’s own words, it is an “indescribable substance.”
Energy Drinks
You probably already know what’s in these. When your body needs a TON of calories, eating food can be too slow and inefficient. These drinks are PACKED with calories.
Pop
They’re refreshing, full of sugar, and we hand them to Arvid ice
cold.

RAAM travels through 12 states. We have made it through California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Kansas. Just a few minutes ago we entered Missouri! We have yet to go through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland in the next 6 days. Thanks for following our journey.
Arvid is working hard to stay awake this morning. The
morning fog makes for beautiful scenery as he approaches Fort Scott, KS
Each night on RAAM the crew gets a few hours sleep. Accommodations are often far less than 5-star. In fact they are usually about 1-star. We have had some good laughs this morning talking about last night’s place. The owner was very friendly and wanted to be very helpful. She brought more towels to our room and dropped a face cloth on to the ground. She promptly picked it up, shook it off and handed it to Arlene. Our Internet only worked when we were positioned in a very specific spot just outside our door. As soon as we turned to walk into the room we lost the connection. We were tired and needing sleep so we gave up. We
managed to get some sleep and carry on. It is amazing what one can tolerate when you are sleep deprived!
Grandpa Arvid could use your crucial logistical support! The first person to find a way to get fresh (Fresh means they sqeak when you bite into them) Cheese Curds to Arvid en route on RAAM will received a signed RAAM Jersey! This is not one of Arvid’s many RAAM jokes and pranks! Get the curds to Arvid and we’ll send you a signed (and Clean, of course) RAAM 2013 jersey!
