Nighttime

Arlene and i (Ruth) are on night support crew duty. It is midnight and the mosquitoes have gone to sleep.

Arvid is riding well, presently on his 14th lap. We will enter distances once a day, after 10am each day. Arvid’s 24 hour day always starts at 10am as that is when the ride began. That means that 10am on June 17 is the end of day one for him.

Early on

The ride is off to a really good start. Arvid is looking strong, the weather is good, not hot, and the pace is strong. Word is that CTV will air the interview they did with Arvid just prior to the start of the ride at 6pm tonight.

24 hour training ride done

Arvid just finished his 24 hour training run. Several others joined him.

He did 551 km and is now sitting and enjoying some yummy looking watermelon.

Oops

Arvid had his first flat today close to base camp. He sent a cyclist to come get us to give him a new tire to save time by him not having to change the tube himself.

A good idea that didn’t go so well. We missed him and spent about 15 minutes trying to find him.

He was smiling when we finally found him. Whew.

This 24 hour run is a good trial for working out support crew links. Gonna figure out “find my friends” app between phones so we will always have a good handle on Arvid’s location

Update Saturday noon

Just refueled Arvid’s supplies with squeakers and fresh ice water. He pulled in for a bit of gogi juice and some sunscreen.

Arvid has cycled 450 km so far since 5 pm yesterday. He will need to average 450 km per day to stay at world record breaking pace.

Wow…imagine 450 km for over 20 days straight. It sorta boggles the mind, doesn’t it? Boggles why anyone would want to try…

But he has 10,000 reasons to try.

It was cold!

Seeing as it is June, a person would think that a light jacket would be sufficient.

A person would be incorrect.

So Ruth and I (Arvid’s niece) called up my mom to bring a coupla pairs of socks and extra jackets. It was gonna be a long cold night

Moms are moms. Picture this: four pairs of socks, four sweatshirts, three pairs of jeans, two pairs of long johns, two hats (with Pom Poms on them bigger than my head), two pairs of mittens, two scarves, a thermos of hot stuff, protein bars (with apologies there wasn’t fresh baking), hot water bottle and heated rice bag. I may or may not have forgotten a few things.

Those things helped us non riders get through the night

Thanx mom.

Pancakes!

Joy Klassen, our host at command central at 5839 Henderson highway, home of Women Refreshed at the Well retreat center, brought pancakes to our roadside picnic table this morning. And fresh coffee. And a friendly visit. And an offer of a hot shower.

We like her a lot.

So far…

Arvid figures he’s covered 382 kilometers.

At least that’s what I think he was saying as he was chomping on pepperoni sticks.
