Arvid had his first three hour sleep. After coffee and a bike chain lubrication his front wheel rolled onto the pavement at 4:23 AM.
Regarding his extra sleep, he stated,”This was a good decision…a much better start than yesterday.”
On the first half lap he was averaging 29 K’s per hour.
Arvid rode by and asked that we, “wash his bike and Turtle Wax his spokes.”
A truly incredible test of physical endurance! As we prepped him for “night- riding”…darkness and cool temperatures, Arvid joked with his new crew members. Another indication that he is in a strong emotional position to challenge the record.
As I got dumped on yet again in the most recent rain storm today, I had to do everything just to stay upright, cutting through water that was 1 inch deep on the road. Even my food cup was filling up and overflowing. In the midst of it all, I was reminded that in Kenya they call rain showers of blessing. In my heart, I immediately said, “God, I am willing to share my blessing with them,”. I did not expect a response. But even after 7 days on my bike, my mind got a very clear message that said, “I want you to invite others to share their blessings with the kids at MCF”. So if you have received a letter in the mail, please consider sending in a donation. If you are following on the website, you can donate online. You can hand deliver a donation to our crew at 5839 Henderson Hwy. I am still waiting for someone to drive by and hand me a donation from the car (when it is not raining). Ruth just told me she picked up 10 cheques at the post office today. I sense there is something stirring the waters and it is called sharing God’s blessings. Thank you to those who have already responded.
Day 7 saw better weather and better lap times (he even brought a few just under an hour). On day 4-6 he was often completing laps in 1:07-1:12, whereas he’s been around 0:58-1:03 for a lot of the day. He fought off sleep deprivation with 90 minutes plus two short naps at night. Here are the stats for day 7:
Day 7 KM: 456
Total KM: 3203
Average KM: 457
Buffer: 109 KM Ahead
Weldon and Arlene are experienced support crew, with this being their third time crewing. Arlene and Ruth did 5 night shifts together while Weldon & Arlene did two of the nights together. Arlene just completed her last night shift and went home to get some well-deserved rest. Weldon & Arlene are in the back row of the picture.
You folks did an awesome job! You are a pleasure to work with.
Thanks for saying yes again!
The new crews begin today: Henry & Bettie, and Paul S and Harry.
The first of our posts featuring someone on the outside looking in. Special thanks to Arvid’s grand-nephew Teagan, for sharing your take on Arvid’s adventures.
Hi my name is Teagan Janzen and I’m ten years old. Arvid Loewen is my great uncle. I love reading Guinness books of world records, and it’s so cool to have a family member who broke a record and is in a Guinness book!
On Thursday evening my family and I were all comfy cosy in our house and it was pouring rain outside. Then we decided to go cheer on my uncle. There he was on his bike in the rain and was just biking, biking, and biking some more! And we were in our warm dry truck, with the windows rolled down, showing our support.
I also saw him biking on Tuesday when we were coming home from a field trip at Lower Fort Gary. Me and some of my friends from Sunday school were jumping up and down in our seats when we saw the signs and then we saw U. Arvid biking, we knew it was him because of his “Grandpas Can” jersey.
It’s so cool what he’s doing with his talent of cycling to help kids in Kenya Africa. It’s awesome that he’s raised so much money. We all pray for and love U, Arvid.
Arvid’s words as he struggled to stay awake on the bike this morning. He has napped twice this morning. A tough beginning to a new day.
Traffic has certainly increased on the weekend as people are out enjoying the summer sun. That also means that more people have come by our home base at 5839 Henderson Hwy. Thanks for the interest.
Two of the grandsons were happy to share some of grandpa’s watermelon!
is coming to an end. What an experience it has been. I’ve heard the stories through the book and from Arvid and now I’ve seen it first hand. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and feel privileged to have been able to contribute. What Arvid does he does truly for the benefit of the charity he rides for. He is passionate about being able to help the Mulli Children’s Family and does it genuinely. Carry on Arvid and I will be here to see you finish your appointed task.
Rob has been Arvid’s day support crew for the last 7 days. He has done an outstanding job of keeping Arvid on the bike. Thank you, Rob! Please come on out and visit the new crew!
A new day and night crew begins tomorrow.
Arvid had a very strong morning of riding Sunday June 22. He has done five laps at or near 1 hour. These laps at the hour pace are huge. They are about the pace he was doing on day one when he was fresh. It’s a good sign that he has moved mostly past his two big issues of the first week. The taking in of enough calories and the fluid retention. He looks strong, he has a great attitude, he’s focused and he is in a groove. The “groove” started last night as he battled through the rain and has picked up today with the best weather of the week so far.
Day 6 has come to a close. It included hail, a few storms, and only 90 minutes of sleep. Arvid has ridden the last 2 laps faster (about an hour compared to 1:07-1:10), and is taking a short break.
Day 6 KM: 459
Total KM: 2747
Average KM: 457
Buffer: 95 KM
