Grace

GraceGrace joined MCF in 1999. Before that, she lived with her parents. At 2 years old, her parents divorced. She was left with a mother unable to provide for her without a job. She was forced to go to the streets, thinking that life would be better. She would eat out of the garbage bins, sleeping outside of shops at night. Policemen would harass her in the street, detaining her for short periods of time.

To reduce stress she resorted to sniffing glue and smoking marijuana.

But God sent a man named Charles Mulli, who gave her food, shelter, education, and love. She started in school in grade 3, and has completed grade 12. Her dream for the future is to become a nurse, proving that, given a chance, even those rejected by the rest of society can excel.

Charles Mulli is a former street child from the slums of Kenya. He became extremely successful in business, but then God asked him to give it all up so he could care for orphaned and abandoned children just like he had been. Charles Mulli is the founder and CEO of Mully Children's Family (www.mullychildrensfamily.org).

MCF provides food, shelter, education, health and spiritual care in a loving family environment to the most vulnerable children in society. Entrepreneurial business initiatives have allowed MCF to reach levels of up to 45% self-sufficiency while raising a family of 2300 children.

God has called me (Arvid) to be an ambassador for Mully Children's Family. I have chosen to use ultramarathon cycling as my platform from which to fulfill this calling. This year I will be participating in Race Across America (www.raceacrossamerica.org). It is a 3000 mile (5000 km) single-stage ultra-marathon bike race from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland. It is recognized as the world's toughest bike race. RAAM 2013 begins on June 11 and racers have 12 days to reach Annapolis. RAAM has a historical DNF (did not finish) rate of about 45%. In its 32-year history less than 300 different solo riders have become official RAAM finishers. To accomplish that goal, riders will need to be on the bike at least 20 hours/day, surviving on 90 minutes of sleep. Charles and Esther Mulli will be at the start of RAAM. It is an excellent opportunity to give Mully Children's Family international exposure. RAAM has become a perfect event to raise funds for charitable causes. I have a 51% chance of becoming an official RAAM finisher, but I have a 100% chance of making a difference. You can follow my race on www.grandpascan.com.

My vision is to be a voice for the thousands of children rescued by Mully Children's Family, and for the thousands still waiting for someone to care. I refuse to accept the common notion that the little bit I can do does not matter in the big picture. God has given me a compassionate love for children I will never even meet. My goal is to inspire grandparents (and others) to see EVERY destitute or abandoned child as a gift from God, deserving of being cared for and loved, just like we do our own children/grandchildren.

In 2006, Ruth and I had the privilege of visiting MCF for the first time. We were introduced to many kids. One of those kids was a girl named Lillian. We thought nothing of it at first. She was just another girl. As we walked with her, we were overcome with emotion when we understood that this was the little girl that was 8 years old and weighed 14 pounds at the time of her rescue. Now she was a healthy teenager. God used Mully Children's Family to perform a miracle. As we got to know a little more about Lillian, our personal wants and desires (the very things that previously stopped us from doing more for destitute kids) seemed trivial and even embarrassing in comparison to the miracle in front of us. Mully Children's Family presently cares for 2300 children. In April of 2013, all of Kenya experienced a devastating rainy season. Besides the incredible damage to the infrastructure, the crops at MCF have been washed away. MCF lost its ability to sell produce and and even feed their own kids. They have to buy food at prices that have doubled because of the disaster caused by the rains.

I am asking you to help. I am trying to raise $100 for each of the 2300 kids presently at MCF. This money will go towards the purchase of food.
